GenZ expects the companies they work for to take public stands on political issues. I prefer working organizations whose values align with my own. Otherwise the cognitive dissonance would be too great to bear each day.
Admittedly, I recognize the barriers between my generation and others, especially in the workplace.
When first reading this article about what’s work appropriate conversation and their interest in getting personal, I imagined the article would be more about GenZ’s candor with diagnoses or identities. Many people love labels, fitting into a category empowers many. I’m a no-label kind of person; I find categorization limiting.
However, there are too many trust issues barring people from being genuine in the workplace.
In thinking about disability and vulnerability, many people will never trust their workplace to provide accommodations they need for thriving not just surviving. Many people with invisible disabilities keep them hidden as a protective measure. Being managed out because of a disability is a thing.
There’s this: The numbers get even worse for Gen-Z and Millennials, both of whom are 31 percent more likely than other generations to express feeling unsafe having tough conversations with the leaders above them.1
And ultimately creating a culture of recognition within organizations, according to research from that article, is one way to foment belonging; it builds trust. It builds safety.
My experience with recognition is spotty. It feels like there are favorites whose work is regularly lauded, and there are the scapegoats whose accomplishments are never acknowledged. It also seems like many managers/supervisors/deans/directors are unaware of their biases and favoritism.
How can we bring equity to recognition? Adding that component to equity audits is a start. What are your ideas?
